Seeing the Top Gear Vietnam special only further increased the anticipation for one day taking part in it myself. If you’re looking how to motorbike Vietnam, the routes to take, the type of motorbike to take, and top things to do in each location, this video will help!
What’s the first thing anyone would need on a Vietnam motorcycle trip? Motorbikes of course! After touching down in Saigon that’s the first “to-do” item we tackled. While I had long dreamed of making the trip on a proper motorcycle it simply wasn’t to be.

The motorbikes that backpackers typically buy are notoriously unreliable. While a few breakdowns might be funny, the group decided to rent so we could maximize the fun part of our trip. We chose to rent more reliable brand new motorbikes from Tigit in Saigon. From a safety and reliability standpoint, Tigit rentals are far better than the Chinese knock off Honda Wins that can be found in backpacker quarters for sale around the city.
Vietnam Motorbike Trip Distance and Prep
The distance that we’ll be driving on this Vietnam motorcycle trip is the equivalent of riding from Key West to Chicago. That’s over 2,400 kms. We’ll be joined for the first two weeks by two travel companions.
Before heading out on the open road the group also does a bit of shopping to prepare for the journey ahead. Vietnamese roads are a bit crazy with all of the motorcycle traffic so helmets and proper clothing are necessary. Allison opts for a helmet, kneepads, and elbow pads because she’s careful. Jaime goes with rolled up sleeves, an unbuckled helmet and flipflops because he is about two steps out of the trailer park.

ABOUT US:
We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly – and most importantly, the real and real funny.

We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you – the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test – one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.

  1. If you ever get stopped by Vietnamese police all you need to do is hand them $20 inside any paper do not give them your passport or visa not until they really ask you. that is it. Stop singing guy, you wake me up by the way keep your day job. There are a lot of songs in the karaoke control included English songs, you guy need to search for it

  2. How would you go about buying a bike from other travellers?

Are there forums or social media pages that are good for this sort of thing in Hanoi or Saigon?

  3. Fellow biker here from the U.S. I sooooo envy you both. In the same plaza as my gym, was a nail salon owned by a awesome Vietnamese family. I was married at the time, but I must say that it took ALL of my 240 very muscular pounds to not disrespect my wife, and to not disrespect their daughter. Thee most beautiful, kind, and gentle woman I have ever known. Financially I couldn't now afford to travel to Vietnam, but I often dream how incredible it would be. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH, and the most beautiful women in the world.

  4. Hehe. The cops in Mui Ne managed to do me dirty twice – when entering and when leaving the town, cheeky bastards. ^^

  5. Dude, the curly hair guy kind of nailed the words he was singing. He was almost pronouncing the words correctly. Fun video.

  6. This has got to be one of those crazy adventures you would want to be in.. 😍😍😍…

im not going to watch this lengthy vid..
3:30 am and still watchin this 🤣🤣🤣

  7. You gave a girl a motorbike and 2 days later she wanna lead. Kkk.
She learned to ride a bike even faster than a local girl truly.
    You guys are so awesome.
Great videos, great mood, great adventure.

  11. Thats a good choice.
I bought a bike a brand new Honda Dual Sport from Tigbit on Paypay for $3000 US.
6000 mile later they bought it back $2,700
    Lucky you found them

  12. Love your Youtube videos. Do they have stronger motorcycles in Vietnam like a Kawasaki Versys to rent? Because the motorbikes looked like it struggle passing through those fuel trucks.

  13. Fantastic Moto-Vlog Documentary of your south to north adventure…I was there back in 2007 and did the North to South route on sleeper buses and had a great time visited all of the cities you did over a three week period….currently living in Northern Manila and will also check out your Philippines Adventure….Great work on this it must have taken quite some time to edit all this footage…thanks again.

  14. that looks so fun …. any rich girls out there that wants to go to vietnam and is willing to pay all my expense ….i'm willing to go with you …. i can translate … i'm vietnamese …. i just want to see vietnam …. already have my passport ready …. : )

  15. this should be a lesson to everyone to not plan too far ahead. if they didn't prebook all their accommodations they could have stayed places they loved for extra days, waited out bad weather, and enjoyed an already great trip even more. thanks for the video guys. its inspiring

  16. it's not a easy mission, you guys were awesome. BTW if you guys want a vietnames tell you about vietnam, visit my channel. thanks

  17. Love your video and many places you've visited. Exactly the kind of travel I like to do. Definitely gave me some great ideas where I want to check out next. Awesome job.

  18. Why you don't wear protection on a bike is beyond my comprehension. Also you need to always check over bike especially oil. Treat it like a car and make sure tyres have air in them, oil in engine etc. At least you know next time.

  19. Thanks for nice words about VN. It was a wonderful trip for you guys. Hope that you will come back VN and do more trips. You missed many places in the middle of VN like Quang Binh, Hue. Those are even better than many places you visited to. 🤩.
